What Are Dental Crowns?

Your teeth are put under a lot of strain. This can be from decay or accidental injury. They can start to chip and become misshapen or ground down to a different size.

Crowns are a solution to this issue. They act as a safety helmet (or crown) that covers and protects the damaged tooth. The result for your tooth is that further damage is prevented. The result for you is a full, healthy smile that will increase your confidence.

Dental Crown Surgery:

During your first visit, you can expect the dentist to examine the affected tooth or teeth and take an x-ray. In some cases, a root canal might need to be taken before crowns are fitted. If this is the case, then this will be discussed at your initial appointment.

The tooth that is receiving the crown will then be filed down. An impression will then be made of the existing teeth above and below the filed tooth. This ensures that your new crown doesn’t affect your bite

Bridges

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a replacement for missing teeth. Your dentist can offer a number of different bridge options, including a conventional bridge or a fixed bridge, consisting of a false tooth or teeth attached to crowns. The teeth on either side are prepared so that they become abutments (like those that are inserted for dental implants), easing the process of inserting and fusing the bridge to the teeth adjacent to the gap.

Another type of bridge is an adhesive bridge, although it does not offer the stability of a fixed bridge, as it consists simply of a false tooth bonded by wings to the adjacent teeth.

A cantilever bridge is similar to the fixed bridge, but with just one crown attached to the neighbouring teeth as opposed to two.
